General Information

What is the purpose of the First-Generation High School Conference?

This conference is designed to support first-generation high school students who are working towards post-secondary education and beyond. Through engaging workshops, resources, and community building, this conference will aim to give the confidence to be able to achieve student goals and persevere.

Who is eligible to attend the conference?

This conference is designed to serve high school students (9th through 12th grade) who identify as first-generation students.

What is a first-generation student?

A first generation student is a student whose parent(s)/guardian(s) have not completed a four-year college degree in the United States.

When and where will the conference take place?

The conference will be held on Friday, April 17th, at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado. Programming is officially scheduled from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, starting with our welcome session. We ask that schools arrive by 9:00 AM to allow students and guests time to check in, get settled, and enjoy a light breakfast. While official programming concludes at 2:30 PM, we will also host a networking and open space session afterward, giving students the opportunity to connect, enjoy music, light refreshments, and participate in giveaways.

What can students expect from the conference?

Students can expect a busy yet impactful day. Students will participate in interactive workshops, panels, campus tours, networking opportunities, keynote speakers from University leadership and First-gen community, and experience a day at CSU campus.

What are the goals or outcomes for students who attend?

Our goal is for students to leave feeling empowered, inspired and supportive. We want to give the opportunity to first-generation students to see their highest potential and start to think about what future they want to build for themselves!

Is there a specific attire that students should come in?

No. We encourage students to come as they are and feel comfortable. Appropriate school dress code is encouraged to be enforced.

What should students bring to prepare for this conference?

A positive attitude and anything that students need throughout the day. We encourage students to not bring valuable items such as backpacks or technology such as laptops because students won’t be needing them and there is no space for storage. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles or whatever they need to feel comfortable throughout the day. Note: all students are responsible for the items they choose to bring. Stolen or lost items will NOT be the responsibility of the CSU community hosting the event.

Registration & Attendance

How do schools register their students?

Schools may register by completing the online registration form available on our website. Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email with next steps and additional event details.

Is there a registration deadline?

Yes. The registration deadline is March 31st. If capacity is reached the registration will be closed. We encourage schools to register as soon as possible as communication has been sent to over 150 High schools. The best way to ensure this experience is by registering early.

Is there a limit on the number of students each school can bring?

To help ensure broad access for all schools, we are currently recommending a limit of 30 students per school. If your school is interested in sending additional students, please reach out to us, we’ll do our best to accommodate requests where possible so that all attendees can fully benefit from the conference experience.

Is there a cost to attend?

Yes. Our group bundle cost is $200 per every 10 students 1 chaperone brings. Or there is also student individual prices of $25.

What is included in registration?

Registration covers the cost of attending the conference and meals include a light breakfast, lunch, and conference merchandise, such as bags, water bottles, notebooks, and other items to support participants throughout the day. Attendees will also have access to all conference sessions, various workshops, a CSU campus tour, and networking opportunities.

Can individual students register, or must they register through a school?

We ask that students register through their school counselor or designated school representative to ensure proper supervision and communication

Logistics & Planning

Will transportation be provided?

Schools are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from campus. Detailed drop-off and parking instructions will be shared prior to the event.

What time should schools arrive and depart?

Check-in will begin at 8:45am, and the program will conclude at 2:30pm. We recommend arriving at least 15–20 minutes before the start time to allow for parking and check-in.

Will meals be provided?

A light breakfast will be available during check-in at the start of the day. While we will have access to the CSU dining hall, the breakfast will be simple and designed to give students and guests a chance to settle in. If anyone has special dietary restrictions, please list them in the registration form, and we will do our best to accommodate all needs. The CSU dining hall already supports a variety of dietary requirements, so we aim to make the breakfast accessible for everyone.

For Counselors & Chaperones

What is the required student-to-chaperone ratio?

Schools must be accompanied by a chaperone. There at least needs to be 1 chaperone per 20 students. Chaperones are responsible for supervising students throughout the event.

Will there be sessions specifically for counselors or educators?

Yes. We will offer a dedicated session for counselors and educators focused on supporting first-generation students through the college application and transition process and other programming while students are in their workshops

What supervision responsibilities do chaperones have during the event?

Chaperones are expected to supervise students throughout the day, assist with attendance and transitions between sessions, support student engagement, and remain on-site for the duration of the conference.

Accessibility & Safety

Is the conference accessible for students with disabilities?

Yes. The conference location is ADA accessible. If students require specific accommodations, please indicate this during registration so we can plan accordingly.

How can schools communicate accommodation needs?

Accommodation requests can be submitted through the registration form or by contacting us directly at [email protected] by the registration deadline.

What safety protocols will be in place during the event?

The event will follow all campus safety protocols. Staff and volunteers will be present throughout the day to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.

Who should we contact in case of emergency on the day of the event?

All First-Generation Student Organization (FGSO) executive board members and CSU partners will be present throughout the conference. If any issues arise please find one of them and we will do our best to find a solution. If it is a life threatening situation please call 911.

Additional Information

Will photos or videos be taken during the event?

Yes. Photos and videos may be taken for promotional purposes. A media release form will be included in the registration materials.
